To celebrate our wedding anniversary, we booked 2 nights at Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok through Chase The Edit. By stacking four layers of savings — $250 The Edit credit, $250 Chase Travel Select hotel credit, and 8,500 UR points redeemed at 2 CPP (worth $170) — our final out-of-pocket cost was just $3.33. The rate also included daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit, and we earned 8,699 IHG Bonus Points on top of it all. This is hands-down the best CSR redemption I’ve ever made.
Room & Welcome Amenity
We were lucky to receive a complimentary upgrade to a Premium Twin Room — the highest category for a twin configuration (suites are only available as king rooms). The room was brand-new, spacious, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable. I particularly loved the oversized soaking tub and the incredibly comfortable beds. A huge thank you to Ms. Kantrira for the thoughtful arrangements! The welcome amenity was an elegantly plated selection of fresh fruit and chocolates — the fruit was delightfully fresh. Since I try to limit my caffeine intake, I didn’t eat much of the chocolate, but the gesture was genuinely heartwarming.
Dining: Excellent Breakfast, Underwhelming Dinner
- Breakfast is highly recommended: The breakfast at Stock.Room was outstanding. The seating is well-spaced — never crowded — and the staff are warm without being intrusive. The selection is vast and varies daily. My personal highlights were the pastries, made-to-order omelettes, and milk in glass bottles. The fresh panini station was a fun novelty, too. After two mornings in a row, I still couldn’t get enough — my only regret is a stomach that couldn’t hold more! One standout feature: the restaurant offers decaffeinated coffee with a subtle smoky flavour that paired beautifully with milk — a rare and thoughtful touch for those of us limiting caffeine.
- Dinner was disappointing: Since we had the $100 property credit to burn, we opted for the dinner buffet at Stock.Room. The experience was a stark contrast. While the concept of a “buffet plus à la carte” sounds promising, the ingredients overlapped heavily (just cooked in different ways: grilled, braised, chilled). The variety was limited, the flavours uninspiring, the meats were generally tough, and the seafood lacked freshness. The only standout was the freshwater prawns. Honestly, given the price point, I’d strongly suggest using your property credit at one of the other on-property restaurants instead.
Hotel Facilities
- Pool: A swim right after breakfast was pure bliss. Early morning, the pool was almost empty — no Instagram crowd, just genuine tranquility. The water was clean with no harsh chemical smell, slightly cool but perfectly refreshing in Bangkok’s heat. I had the pool almost to myself for 30 minutes — highly recommend this time slot if you’re there to actually swim, not pose. (Funny side note: on both mornings, I spotted the same guest whose silhouette reminded me uncannily of Bruce Willis. Staring at his bald head, I couldn’t help but think of his final smile in Armageddon. I truly hope we’ll see more of him in future films.)
- Gym: Impressively spacious and well-equipped. Beyond the standard cardio and weights, there’s also a climbing wall and boxing equipment. Everything is brand-new, framed by a tasteful industrial-chic aesthetic. A genuinely excellent fitness experience.
Service & Member Benefits
- Check-in: The lobby was packed when we arrived and the wait was considerable. The staff were genuinely friendly and the welcome drinks were delicious, but the check-in flow and queue management have clear room for improvement.
- Platinum Welcome Benefit: The hotel converts the standard welcome drink into a 450 THB F&B credit, redeemable at any bar or restaurant on property. Personally, I prefer the old-school approach of a dedicated menu and direct ordering — simpler and more intuitive. We ended up spending it at the in-room mini bar, which worked out fine. Just remember the 17% tax and service charge on top.
- Shuttle & Happy Hours: Both were available but we didn’t use them. The shuttle runs hourly from 8 AM to 7 PM. Kimpton’s signature complimentary bicycles were also there, though Bangkok’s heat made that a tough sell. Happy Hours run 5–6 PM, and based on my experience at Kimpton Taipei, I’d expect a similar spread of red/white wine and snacks.
As a former Wi-Fi product PM, I can never resist running a speed test whenever I check in somewhere. Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok passed with flying colours — the connection was stable, low-latency, and more than capable of streaming or video calls. Not bad at all for a hotel network.
Nearby: Lumphini Park
Just a short walk from the hotel, Lumphini Park is home to dozens of massive water monitor lizards, some stretching up to 2 metres in length. Watching locals nap on the grass while giant reptiles lumber past them is genuinely surreal — and absolutely worth a detour.
Verdict
Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok is a beautifully refined hotel that delivers genuine tranquility in the middle of a bustling city. If your travel style leans toward slow living — savouring the property, recharging properly, and appreciating thoughtful design — this place is a wonderful choice.
